Dental on-lays are artificial coverings that are placed on top of damaged teeth to repair significant decay, fractures, or large fillings. Because less of the natural tooth is removed, dental on-lays are a less intensive alternative to crowns.
The On-lay Restoration Process
Dental on-lays require two appointments. During the first appointment, the dentist will take impressions of your teeth and attach a temporary dental on-lay to prevent pain and discomfort between appointments. During the second visit, the permanent dental on-lay is attached with cement, and your dentist will review proper care and cleaning techniques.
Dental on-lays, like most restorations, may require replacement after several years, but good oral hygiene, diet, and regular dental checkups can greatly extend the life of your on-lays.
