For patients unhappy with the appearance of their teeth, porcelain veneers can dramatically improve the shape and color of their smile. Custom-made for each patient, porcelain veneers are bonded to the front of the teeth and can serve as an alternative to crowns for correcting cosmetic defects. Porcelain veneers may be an option for patients concerned with crooked teeth, misshapen teeth, severely discolored or stained teeth, teeth that are too small or too large, unwanted or uneven spaces, and worn or chipped teeth. With the proper care, most dentists agree that porcelain veneers can last up to 20 years, but poor dental hygiene and excessive force can damage veneers and shorten their lifetime.
The Porcelain Veneers Process
At Webster Dental Care, porcelain veneers can typically be applied within two office visits.
During the first appointment, the surfaces of the teeth are reduced and shaped to accommodate the size of the veneers. Because only a minimal amount of shaping is needed, porcelain veneers are a virtually pain-free cosmetic treatment. After the teeth are shaped, impressions are taken, and your dentist will consult with you to determine the appropriate veneer color.
During the second appointment, the veneers are attached with bonding cement and hardened with a special light. Unlike other cosmetic treatments, porcelain veneers do not have a recovery time, but patients may experience sensitivity to heat and cold for several days.
